Our Approach to Teaching

Embodied, Elemental, Experiential Learning

The journey we offer is blended in many ways, making our approach to teaching and learning unique amongst herbal medicine schools in the UK.

Our intention behind how we structure our herbalism courses is to provide a blend of the best aspects of a traditional herbal apprenticeship, a classic academic course and hands-on herbalism workshops so you are well held by us and can relax into your journey.

On our courses, ancient oral tradition weaves seamlessly across the old ways and modern day, shuttling the thread of learning across the tapestry of knowledge.

We do this by:

  • combining the benefits of regular in-person gatherings with focused live online group sessions accompanied by guided 1:1 audio teachings
  • exploring new knowledge through a well-structured and carefully paced course curriculum without the burden of classic academic requirements like exams and essays
  • providing regular opportunities to get hands-on, whilst inviting you to experiment with whatever techniques most interest you as inspiration strikes.

    Our courses do not require formal assignments, written papers, assigned readings or exams.

Embodied

You will meet each new medicinal plant through the gateway of the senses, so any knowledge you acquire about them links directly to physical sensations - the ones that most effectively trigger our memory. You will build your relationship with each plant through this embodied approach so that you feel it and know it, rather than memorise it and think it.

Elemental

Every concept you learn about the inner workings of herbal medicine is brought back to its elemental components. Is it hot or cold? Wet or dry? Constricted or lax? An imbalance of fire, air, earth, water or ether? Yes, there is some new terminology you will become familiar with along the way, but we are expanding your language, rather than teaching you jargon. Connecting with the elements each step of the way means you can feel your way through a situation and the herbs to call on support it, backed up by the knowledge and skills you develop. In this way, we are continually turning up the volume on your intuition, training and honing your ability to listen and respond safely and effectively with herbal medicine.

Experiential

The more you can experience hands-on learning, the more herbal medicine will become muscle memory for you, continually flowing amongst your hands, heart and head. As well as making a wide range of herbal remedies and learning their nuances - with all materials provided, you witness the herbs in our apothecary garden transform across the four seasons. You taste every single herb with focus and intention as you get to know it. And you experience the power and joy of sharing the journey with an intimate group of like-minded souls who remind you in countless ways you are not alone in what you seek.
